Fairground Restoration
At Tooley's Amusements, we're passionate about preserving Britain's fairground heritage through traditional restoration and expert craftsmanship.
Led by Thomas Tooley, our work combines hands-on restoration with the historic art of fairground painting, signwriting and decorative scrollwork. Having worked closely alongside renowned fairground artist Pete Tate of Tate Décor as a mentor, Tom continues a traditional craft passed down through generations of fairground artists.
From vintage rides and amusements to traditional fairground artwork, every project is restored with care, authenticity and respect for its history, ensuring these cherished pieces can be enjoyed for years to come.

Recent Projects

Barkers Waltzer
With Barkers Waltzer, the owner wanted to keep the original design on the rounding boards and shutters but alter the colours.
We completed this and then designed a 32ft front sign for the waltzer to match. This was decorated by hand and finished in an automotive lacquer.

Porters Waltzer
Porters Waltzer was a blank canvas. After a meeting with the owner, we drew sketches for a concept design and then hand decorated the ride with all parts finished in an automotive lacquer.

Screamachine Waltzer
The pattern for this ride was designed by my tutor Pete Tate and given to me to put on the ride. Once we had completed the rounding boards, we drew up a 36ft front board with large raised letters, all individually lit. This was hand decorated including lots of metal flake and finished in an automotive lacquer.

Peter Pan Railway Trains
These trains were built for Buttons sites in the 1960’s. They are manufactured out of steel with lots of chrome fittings. Over the years, the steel tin work had rotten and filler had been used to keep on top of them. We shot blasted the trains to reveal bare steel and replaced any areas which had rotted through. These then went to the paintshop and sprayed in 2k, lined and lacquered. We remade the floors, had the seats re-upholstered and had the chimneys and fittings re-chromed. We also had individual covers made for each one to help them last another 60 years.

Austin J40 Paybox
This paybox was commissioned to replace the original and the customer wanted the same sort of design but ‘better’. We hand blended the individual bricks to give it the look of a traditional garage and added features such as the enamel signs and characters to bring it alive. The front and top of the paybox was done in a traditional fairground style with flamboyant enamels over silver leaf. This was all finished in an automotive lacquer which gave a stunning finish.

Bretts Ghost Train Front Restoration
This ghost train was decorated by Hall and Fowle in the 1950’s and had unfortunately been coated with a varnish which had browned off considerably in the past 40 years making the original artwork very difficult to see. Using various methods, we removed the varnish to reveal the original artwork. This also revealed many damaged areas which we then touched in to the original design and then finished with a modern varnish to seal and protect for the next generation. This ride can be seen at the National Fairground Musuem, Statfold.

Toyset Decoration
This toyset was a blank canvas and the owner brought us the rounding boards for designing the shape and pattern. We have since completed the decoration of the rounding boards and centre shutters to an original design. This has been finished in a high gloss varnish.

Penny Arcade
The owner of this penny arcade has some mobility problems. He was looking for a stall he could fold out with ease but still look traditional. We altered the trailer to suit these needs and decorated it to look a late 1930’s Lakin style as his wish.

Fairground Heritage Trust - Statfold Move
We worked with the trust in the large move from Devon to its new home at Statfold Country Park in January-May 2025. This involved installing 4 major heritage rides, games and juvenile rides into the building. We worked with the ride inspectors and completed any remedial work they requested. We re-installed all of the ride electrics and carried out functional tests for each of the rides.

Hurricane Jets
This ride is our own and operates permanently down in Dreamland, Margate. We have completely rebuilt the mechanics of the ride and the outside walkway. We have also decorated the rocket and all of the centre panels you can see on the ride.

Statfold Train Ride
The paintwork on the sign on the top of this ride had all blistered off. We removed any old paintwork, used a 2k primer, hand decorated and added an automotive lacquer to make sure it lasts.

Big Wheel Wings
These big wheel wings had to match the original. These are hand decorated with some airbrush work and finished in an automotive lacquer.

Bressingham Steam Gallopers
The gallopers needed to be stripped ready for an in depth inspection. We took the ride down to the centre and got the parts ready for inspection. Once complete, we rebuilt the ride and completed a functional test. This was all completed on time and on a tight schedule.

More Painting Projects
A collection of painting and finishing work completed over the years across a variety of fairground attractions and features. Each project is completed with careful attention to detail, helping to preserve the character and charm that make these attractions so special.

Tooleys Amusements
Many of our rides and games have been traditionally restored, or hand built by us, with all traditional fairground artwork hand painted in-house. Each attraction reflects our passion for preserving the history and craftsmanship of the traditional British fairground.
